Chronicles of a Selfish Mommy

Archive for December 2013

As I sit here listening to our contractor talk about everything that needs to be repaired in our home. I am simultaneously excited, upset, energized, and grateful. As I scour the sites (ok, pinterest) for ideas on remodels, I can’t help but think we were actually very fortunate this year. What a way to head into 2014! Talk about leaving 2013 with a BANG! It’s really been one pretty great year, though.

Let’s start with the latest event. To put it bluntly, our home flooded. That’s right, FLOODED. While I was off running my marathon, a pipe connection leading to an upstairs bathroom decided it would be the perfect time to crack. And crack it did, sending water spraying through the entire bathroom & soaking my daughter’s room, playroom, and some of the guest bedroom. We don’t know how long it ran for, we suspect btw 12-24 hrs which was enough time for the entire downstairs to flood. It was so bad, neighbors called to tell us it was coming out of our front door and DOWN the OUTSIDE of our home. Neighbors were kind enough to kill water and power to the home as soon as they noticed. All the downstairs floors were covered with at least a 1/2 inch of water. Suffice it to say, all floors were considered trashed. The downstairs ceilings & most walls in the office, laundry, hallway & living rooms were also ruined. This means all crown molding and baseboards downstairs had to come off as well. Oddly enough, only a few pieces of furniture & electronics were damaged.

I chose to see this as an opportunity to update our home. So, I am excited that HECK YEA, ALL NEW floors both up and downstairs, baseboards, crown molding, paint! Upset because the water damage has burdened and stressed our lives with the state of our home & the management & work it will take to get it fixed. The place where we come to relax and recharge is in shambles. The time & the process of reinstating it will be frustrating. But, it’s like we are gonna have a brand new home without moving!

Working backwards from this point, I mentioned a marathon. You read this right, a marathon. This was my 3rd marathon attempt & the 2nd I completed. It was better than my 2nd attempt which I didn’t complete, but not quite as good as my first. Let’s just say that I finished & I am not that eager to do another one anytime soon. The marathon kick I was on may be a post for another day….

We went to Tucson to visit the Cox family over Thanksgiving.  We had a wonderful time while there.  Even had the chance to take some much-needed family pictures!  The getting to Tucson was another incident all together.  En route, my brand new car’s sunroof decided to explode.  And by explode, I mean just that.  It shattered into millions of pieces.  THE. ENTIRE. ROOF.  Thank goodness the mesh covering was closed and no one was injured.  We drove 4 hours in cold weather with the sun roof covered in cardboard taped to my car.  It was mostly just annoyingly loud.  It was fixed (mostly) in Tucson, but not in time for Connor to make school and my to make an important meeting.  Hence, C & I got to FLY back home!  Unfortunately, the sun visors weren’t screwed in or something like that.  I had to go into the Austin dealer to get that corrected.

I went to Brazil for a week for a work conference.  I wish I could say that I saw a bunch of sites; alas, I did not.  However, I DID meet some amazing, wonderful people, went to a football (soccer) game, & ate some Brazilian food.  I got to run the streets of Porto Alegre and along the banks of the beautiful Guaiba River (lake).  Those memories shall stay with me.  I am so fortunate!

In September Jeff & I went to London with the Mills.  2013 concluded 10 yrs of marriage and this was our celebration.  I do not have enough good things to say about the experience.  It was AMAZING!  It was WONDERFUL!  There was SO MUCH to see & do.  We had SO MUCH FUN!  We spent about a week there & I think we covered all the main attractions and sights.  This probably deserves its own post (which I will most likely never do).  Brooke started full-time Pre-K which she LOVES!  Connor started 2nd grade which to date has been a breeze for him.

The summer months were a blast as well!  I got promoted at work.  It’s been a real mental challenge for me to switch gears & become someone who our mgmt team wants me to become.  It’s a stressful gig that I still sometimes feel like I am not cut out for.  I do enjoy my new role & continue to rise up (I hope) to the expectations laid out for me.  Our family took a South Padre Beach vacation with the Mills & Maleks.  With so many people you might think it would be cumbersome; surprisingly, it went AWESOME!  We spent almost a week in SP and it was the perfect amount of  time.  Being from south Texas one would have expected me to have been there before.  I had not, so it was a good first experience for me as well!  Looking forward summer 2014!

The earlier parts of the year are somewhat of a blur.  Lots of races for me, some I even placed in my age groups! We kicked off 2013 with a lil trip to Disneyland & we are heading out of 2013 with a nice uneventful night at home.

Welcome 2014, the Cox family is gonna OWN you!

It’s been a LONG, LONG while…. I haven’t felt any real need to blog. It’s been hard enough getting THROUGH our life much less chronicling it!

This post is not an update. While to some this would be good, most who might read this little post would not be interested at all. We do all the same stuff as most middle class American families do….. no need for me to blog about it.

I was asked awhile back how I tackle everything that comes my way. The proverbial, “how do you do it all?” Honestly, my first thought was, “I DON’T! Please help!” Then I thought, “HOT DAMN, what am I portraying that someone would think I have my shit together?” Over the course of the year, I have thought about this concept of having and doing it all. Trying to compare my life to lives of my friends or those that social media shouts at us is so exhausting! I have been struggling with this. The outside pressures we ALLOW into our lives. Just recently I heard myself saying & yes I actually posted on Facebook…. “I HAVE TO DO ALL THE THINGS!” When & why did it come to this?!

I needed a new perspective. Who could help me find it? How did I go about finding someone with a good perspective? Blogs, friends, family? Then it hit me. Why do I need someone to lead me?! What makes what they are doing or saying any more important or beneficial than my OWN take? We’re all so diverse about what is important for us. And therein lies the key. Did you catch it?

The only way to have it “all” is to prioritize what is important to YOU & YOUR FAMILY. The rest is just noise meant to enjoy, entertain, or (gasp) glean tips & tricks from. There is no right way, there is only the way that works for you.

I challenge each of you to reflect on not the minutia or the everyday, but the core principles & values you want to define your life by. Make sure that what you do everyday can relate in some small way to one of those core principles/values. We get so bogged down by competition, envy, one upmanship that we forget our own paths & values. Being able to do it all is one thing, but wanting to may be another. Sometimes, when we focus on what’s important to us…..we feel like we are doing and having it all!
