Chronicles of a Selfish Mommy

Archive for November 2010

First, apparently I need to choose something else to do in place of the 101 list.  Oh, I still plan to have the list which reminds me – I need to tweak it!  For another time, I digress….anyhoo, I am going to jump on the picture a day for a month bandwagon.  To those that know me well (which are like all 4 of you who read this blog) can attest that this will be ridiculously hard for me.  I have chosen the easy month of December for this challenge – game on tomorrow!

Second, the bestie over at My Crazy Life has posted a blog about something we chatted about on our run this morning.  I too had been giving this whole “I am spoiling my kids rotten” thing some thought.  On my way back from Tucson, on Black Friday (gah!  I didn’t shop!), I decided instead of “limiting” because this is the only way to show how to be humble or that we don’t just deserve everything handed to us, or that more isn’t necessarily always best… That Connor & I would volunteer our time at a Soup Kitchen or shelter serving a holiday meal.  We will also continue our tradition of sponsoring a family for the holiday and buying them presents as well.  I figured at 5, Connor, is now old enough to really take part & understand the reason we are doing it.  Not only will we set a family tradition & make memories, but will (hopefully) open our children’s eyes to the fact that although we are fortunate, others are not.  I am hoping that by building a strong foundation in community & giving back that I will build empathy, instill compassion, and impart recognition that not everything comes so easily.

Maybe this will also ease some of the guilt of me spoiling my kids rotten & maybe (just maybe) making them more grateful & thankful for what they have….

Here are some of my volunteer ideas for the Selfish Family this Holiday Season.  I wanted something with meal serving, but couldn’t find anything a 5 yr old could do.

Adopt a Family – supporting an entire family for the holiday

Our local Starbuck’s is supporting our Children’s Shelter, AngelHeart, by donating pastries, they need someone to drop them off daily – Pastries for Kids

Children at AngelHeart want Santa to visit as well – toy donation

Brown Santa – donating to & working for

According to the dictionary, LIFE is “the course of existence or sum of experiences and actions that constitute a person’s existence”.  Our experiences and actions becomes our meaning, our reason for being, our existence.

Selfish Daddy & I created life by bringing 2 more humans into the world.  I continue to create life by making sure these 2 people (as well as myself and Selfish Daddy) have experiences with meaning that become wonderful, fond memories.  I want to make sure their existence is cherished & nurtured.  I want their actions to mean something to not only them, but to others as well.  I once told my son that I would consider myself successful if he & his sister turned out to be happy, well-adjusted, contributing members of society.  These are all obscure adjectives; I know, but good things to strive for nonetheless.

Where has LIFE taken the Selfish Family recently?  Lots of places!  This Selfish Mommy has been extremely busy trying to bring meaning and memories into the lives of the Selfish Family.

When we last left off, we were just starting September.  This was a nice, slow month filled with Saturday soccer games, Thursday evening soccer practices, Monday evening Karate, T/Th Pre-K classes, and Wed Gymnastics which also included Brooke.  Work was finally starting to equalize for me as I could finally hand over my previous role to its new owner.  Phew!

October was when things started to really pick up.  We kicked it off right by finally taking that long-awaited trip to Sea World on Oct 1st!  What a GREAT and memorable day!  It was Sea World’s start of the Halloween season and they had tons of fun things to do & see.  The kids thoroughly enjoyed it!  Also that weekend, I got to visit with my dear friend Monica who was back in town for short stint.  I got to grab some delicious pizza with her & Tina at a place they both have raved about for a while – Homeslice Pizza.  LOVES!  The following weekend, Connor & I ran the Pflugerville Pfamily Pfun Run at Lake Pflugerville.  I placed 3rd!  First time placing!   That night we celebrated Tina’s Birthday at Maggiano’s which is family style all you can eat Italian meal.  YUM! The weekend of Oct 16th & 17th was super busy! We headed out with Selfish Nana & Gramps to Sweet Berry Farms in Marble Falls for their annual Fall Festival.  When we rode up, we were completely overwhelmed by the number of cars in the lot – totally crazy!  But once we got out and started to understand how to go about it, we had a BLAST!  We had a hayride, rode the barrel train, tried to find our way through the cornfield maze, and took lots of great pics!  Also that weekend, we made our way to the Texas Renaissance Festival which is held in Plantersville, TX every year.  It was the Selfish Clan’s first time to attend.  The theme for this weekend was 1001 Dreams, so everyone was dressed as Enchanted Creatures things like wizards, elves, fairies.  It was definitely a sight and I would go back again!  Long day filled with interesting costumes & people.  We attended several shows (most of them were not appropriate for kids) & rode several “man” powered rides.  To bring it home, the last weekend in October was a doozy.  Connor had his Karate Tournament which he placed 1st.  Selfish Dad rode in The Big Enchilada Buffet (90mi mt bike ride).  Selfish Mom attended the Annual Malek Halloween Party as a Peacock.  The kids went trick-or-treating on Halloween as a Shark (Connor) & Lady Bug (Brooke).  This was Brooke’s first time and as soon as she realized people were giving her candy, she was completely onboard.

This brings us to November.  Ah, November.  We jumped started the weekend by buying a brand new 2010 GMC Yukon Denali!  We celebrated Connor’s 5th Birthday the first weekend in November at Texas Jumping Beans.  It’s a large warehouse filled with various inflatables.  We had a great turnout and everyone had a blast followed by an awesome cake shaped as a Semi-Truck!  I celebrated my birthday with some friends at PF Chang’s & Connor completed his karate classes earning his advanced orange belt.  Connor completed soccer and started indoor soccer this month.  Boy howdy, indoor soccer is life death match fighting for kids!  It’s gonna be interesting…..  Brooke came down with croup right before our trip to Tucson, fortunately, it was very mild.  We left for Tucson on Oct 18th and had a nice weeklong vacation visiting family.  Selfish Daddy rode in El Tour de Tucson on Saturday, Nov 20th.  It is 109 miles of road biking.  He completed the course in just over 6hrs which earned him GOLD!  I am very proud of him!  Also while in Tucson, I ran their Cross Country Classic.  It was a tough 5k as it was crazy hilly and very uneven footing.  Thanksgiving Day was filled with great family & food!

Now on to December!  I am very much looking forward to GNO Cookie Exchange, decorating for the holidays, our Annual White Elephant Party, and seeing the kids open their presents on Christmas Day!

Apparently, I completed my 101 Things oh back in August (22nd).  GAH!  So in recapping, the short, short version since I am so very late – I totally sucked at it.  I realize now that I had too many things that were ongoing as opposed to things I could just mark off the list.  I LOVE list making, so I plan on keeping this going in order to keep me motivated & focused.

However, I plan to morph the blog into something more family oriented (or can’t you tell?).  It was a good 1001 days, filled with many, many exciting things!  Most importantly the birth of our beautiful daughter, Brooke.  When I started this back in Nov 2007 (3 yrs ago!), I had grand plans of which most didn’t really pan out.  Oh well!

I am going to  take the easy route  by recapping simply.  I only succeeded in completing 42 of my 101 items.
