Chronicles of a Selfish Mommy

Archive for July 2010

I see now that I am just not a very good blogger.  Much like my lack of ability to be on time, I just cannot seem to maintain the most active and up to date blog.  I’ll hit ya with some of the highlights of the past month and see where this takes us….

Working out 3x a week is still not on the very top of my gotta get it done list.  Ironic, given I would put getting below 130lbs on the list….Anyhoo, thank goodness for Tina and Mills who have shown me the light (or darkness depending on the season), running in the morning is the best thing for my lifestyle.  I try to run 2x per week with them and eventually would like to add one more day. We typically run a touch over 4 miles on Tues/Thurs.  Funny how I used to think that running that much was crazy, now I  think it crazy if I don’t run at least 3 miles.   If  I can count volleyball every Sunday as working out, then I am so in for this goal…..

Seems those morning workouts are paying off.  Although I am still not at my ultimate goal weight I am hanging awfully close to it.  If only I could give up drinking…, OK, I really don’t want to do that…

Weight goal be damned, what’s really important here is that I beat my 5k PR!  WOOHOO!  My 5K PR was 28:15 and my new PR is wait for it, wait for it…. 28:09.  This new PR broke down to 9:01 miles!  The lil race that could was the Nelson 5k up in good ol Georgetown on Saturday, July 3rd.  We were fooled into thinking this was a small town race.  Although it was a small race, the competition was fierce, FIERCE!  It seems everyone was a hard-core runner, well, we all know I am not.   The race started at 7:30am, was super humid, I forgot my music, and we were so scared by the unannounced shot-gun start that I forgot to hit the start on my watch. I was running for dear life as the second shot-gun rang out and I guess I just never let up.  Now I just have proof that I can most likely run less than 9 min miles, dammit!

In between my working, working out, and drinking (oh & raising a young family), I still try to read at night.  I believe the last I blogged, I wrote about “The Gatecrasher” which I completed, I also read “The Time Traveler’s Wife”, and am now reading “The Lovely Bones”.  The last of which has been agonizing to get through.  It just isn’t my cup of tea.  I have a whole slew of books calling my name if only I can just trudge through this one.

Recently, I decided to make some bigger strides in “finishing” our home.  If I had to be honest with myself, we never quite got around to the whole organization piece.  Given that we now have 2 sets of sticky hands clamoring to get into the pantry and grab everything and anything in arms reach, I took the leap and began the process of organizing the pantry.  How can one small space have so much stuff in it?  It seriously took almost the entire afternoon to go through the contents of the pantry!  I weeded out everything that was old, anything we could give to a food pantry, and then made a list of the organization pieces I would need.  We now have a clean & organized pantry, to keep it that way, well that will be a post for another time.

I’ve been feeling so good about life that spending money seems to be the only way to show this joy.  Needless to say, Mr Selfish believes that there are better ways for me to spread the love…..dirty birdies you lot are, bad, bad….. minds out of gutters, I have a small problem with shoe & shirt buying.  I think this ties in nicely with my goal to dress more professionally Monday-Thursday.  I have really taken to this.  Dolling myself up in spiffy clothes, mani/pedi all did, heels sky-high.  I feel so proud of myself as I walk into my awesome tech support building with all my other professionals (yes, this is sarcasm).

With the craziness that is my life, I involuntarily put my awesome poker playing skills on hiatus.  Our Friday & Saturday nights are filled with fun things like feeding cranky toddlers & getting them to bed, followed by laying comatose on the couches not talking to one another.  Fun stuff, but now that I think of it…we are actually working on our poker faces and learning to bluff!  Anyhoo, I am positive it has been more than 3 months since I have played any game other than Candyland or whack a mole.

Now don’t feel too bad for me just yet, Mr Selfish is the master of the download.  We have seen many, many movies on our sweet new flat screen.  Did I forget to mention that we got a new set-up?  Well, given that the movies (and anyplace else that frowns on yelling kids) is pretty much out of the picture, we figured this was a reasonable purchase.  This purchase lends itself nicely into my goal of seeing all the pointless B movies I can!  Kidding, kidding…. B+?  Seen allot and even have gotten my rear to the theater to see Toy Story 3 and Eclipse, I have priorities, OK?!
