Chronicles of a Selfish Mommy

Family Update

Posted on: February 15, 2009

The Cox family is doing surprisingly well transitioning to a family of 4.  This week is probably a fluke now that I just said that…..

Connor is accepting and loving of his new sister.  He wants to help at every turn.  He especially loves to see her get her diaper changed.  Connor wants to hold and touch Brooke every chance he gets & we normally let him, but……. darn it, he has a cold!  The kid that hasn’t been sick in forever & doesn’t go to daycare gets sick the week his sister is born!  Not happy, not happy – fingers crossed she doesn’t get sick.  Unfortunately, we’re working on some wicked back talk and tantrums from Connor.  He has decided to start really pushing his boundaries and testing our limits with Brooke’s arrival.  We had the biggest breakdown yesterday when we were heading out of HEB.  It probably looked like I was stealing the child!  There have been allot of tears and frustration from Connor, plus feelings of guilt from Mommy…… I feel bad that I still cannot pick him up, cannot play w/him while nursing, have to repeatedly tell him not to touch baby now that he’s sick…. sigh, this too shall pass.  Connor now weighs 37lbs & is over 40 inches tall.  He looks HUGE compared to Brooke & I have to keep telling myself that he too is really still a baby.

Jeff is doing very well since he is off the hook for feeding.  He mostly gets to sleep thru the night, but he’ll have his turn when I return to work the 2nd week of April…. The one thing he did get?  The cold from Connor, so he too is also kinda limiting his Brooke help.  Jeff’s mother is visiting and she is a life jacket for us.  I don’t know what we would be eating for dinner w/out her.  She is an awesome cook and then helps keep things tidy!  Thank you, thank you!

My parents have continued w/their Connor routine and we are ever so grateful for there constant in his life.  We felt it very important not to break his routine too much.  My mother was in the delivery room when Brooke was born and was super excited to get that opportunity.  My Dad saw Brooke as soon as Connor woke up.  They haven’t really gotten to see her too much this week, but they will be getting her full time when I head back to work.

Brooke is changing day by day.  Her rashes have cleared up and she looks SO much better.  She is still a tad jaundiced, but the follow-up w/the pediatrician said she was w/in normal limits.  She apparently shrank and (of course) lost weight, but nothing that isn’t considered totally fine.  As with any newborn she mostly sleeps and eats.  I am shocked with her nights!  The 1st night all she really wanted to do was sleep & we had to wake her to eat.  The 2nd night she ate about every 4 hrs (which is not really a good thing for her at this pt).  The next 2 nights home proved difficult bc she cluster fed at night – eating about every 1.5 hrs.  Then lo & behold, since then she has decided that every 2.5-3 hrs is a good schedule for her followed by (gasp!) sleeping!  I am now sure I just jinxed the whole thing…. Nursing is getting easier every day.  I don’t love it, but it’s not what I thought it would be.  I got lucky that she latches well, loves to eat, and production isn’t a problem for me.  Oh yea – Boppy is AWESOME!  But, oh Lordy, the poop!  How can something so little make so much?!  Nursing babies do it more frequently….it’s a good sign, though.  Means she is getting enough to eat.  Brooke has her next Dr appt on Friday, fingers crossed she gained back some (or all) of her birth weight & that jaundice is gone!  We’re trying to break her finger sucking and work on the pacifier.  We think the pacifier is the lesser of the 2 evils since we can take that away (yes, we know that has yet to be proven)……

Mommy is doing well.  Still recovering, I suppose.  Not as tired as I thought I’d be.  Feeling more guilty than I thought about not being the mother I once was to Connor.  More astounded and happy by nursing than I thought.  Already dropping the weight, since my uterus has FINALLY started to really shrink which took FOREVER!  The drawback, the ENORMOUS knockers from nursing! OMG!  Each one I think (seriously) weighs more than Brooke!  Each one!  I think they make me a good 10lbs heavier!  Yikes!  Surprised I don’t really want to drink, man I missed wine….. had a glass last night, but didn’t have any real urge for more…. how things change…..

All in all – I LOVE MY FAMILY!
