Chronicles of a Selfish Mommy

Archive for February 2008

Being preggers is a wonderful, life changing experience….. blah, it also is a royal pain in the @ss!  I swear, not only does nothing sound good to eat, I am looking only fat, I can’t drink alcohol & am limiting caffeine (to nada as often as I can)…. but now I will also have to sacrifice some of my 101 things…..  Waaaaaa!  😦

Listed below are the items that are officially on hold till I pop this new baby out.

6. Workout 3x per week (whenever I get the urge I may just, but no promises)
7. Keep weight below 130lbs (hahahahahaahhahahahaa)

37. Donate Blood once per quarter (does getting it drawn at the Docter’s every chance they get count?)

86. Actually catch some air wakeboarding (not this summer)
87. Bunny Hop Switch on wakeboard (not this summer)

90. Beat 5k PR – 27:31 (kinda goes along w/the working out bit)
91. Beat 5 Miler PR – 47:13 (kinda goes along w/the working out bit)
97. Get a massage – unless it’s pre-natal (which is highly unlikely), I doubt this one as well this yr
103. Do a canopy tour – hummmmm  😛

The first 3 goals leave me behind, but the last couple I will still have time to get them accomplished before the end of my 3rd year!

I have no idea why I didn’t register for good cookware as wedding gifts.  It actually baffles me!  I so wish I had…. I have been living with th crappiest, crummiest, oldest cookware…. seriously, Jeff and I have had our stuff since college!  It’s not even the good stuff, we’re talking low grade.  Most of my stuff is completely mis-shapen, discolored, & scratched.  It’s a wonder I can even cook with some of the pieces!  😦
Since I have been taking a shine to cooking lately, I decided that I definitely needed and deserved better cookware.  Like a typical Cox, I do extensive and exhaustive research on the top rated cookware.  I read reviews on Amazon, I read Consumer Report Reviews, I hit ebay…. I finally decide that it will either be All Clad or Calphalon.  So, I hit up their indivivdual sites….. so mind numbing….. what do I need?  what does it do?  what does it cost?  does it need to be hand-washed?  Layers – aluminum,. copper, stainless, anodized, non-stick… OH MY!  On and on and on…..
All Clad, to me, is the clear winner.  However, it will be a HUGE punch to the pocketbook.  Even their “low-end” basic stainless steel stuff is more than some of the top end Calphalon!  I begin to obsess.  Can I find it on Craig’s List, on eBay?  Does Bed Bath and Beyond carry it in store for the 20% off?  Yes too all of these, but even so it’s still worth as much as I paid for birthing Connor!  I just don’t think I cook enough or well enough to get these dishes.  😦
On to Calphalon, now here’s a company that makes a bunch of different lines!  Catering to the masses… brilliance!  While I was in Seattle, I asked my very talented cooks of a mother & sister in law for advice.  Lo and behold, what do they have?  They have Calphalon!  Both of them sang raves about the Tri-Ply Stainless Set, heck even the youngest sis in law owns a  set!  Now these women know how to cook, it must be good stuff!  The clouds begin to part & my vision becomes clear…..
Today we purchased our first real cookware!   We went with – you guessed it – the Calphalon Tri-Ply Stainless Steel 13 Piece Set.  Not only does it look sleek and can be dishwashed (which we won’t do bc it’s not “recommended”), it’s heavy duty, has glass lids, cool touch handles, & has superior heating!  Man, I am old!  So old…..  I digress….  anyway, Jeff loves the look & the price.  I love the many style options & that we got a $50 gift card as well as a free wok!  Cooking here I come… well, at least they’ll look pretty on our new stainless pot rock!  P
Note, I must say I am still not entirely sold.  I am seriously thinking of going back for the Calphalon Infused Anodized One products – better list of options and they are oven safe!  hummm….. decisions, decision…. still gonna mark this off bc I DO own new pots and pans one way or another!
UPDATE! We went back this evening and we returned the Tri-ply and got the Calphalon Infused Anodized One 10 Piece set!

#10: Volunteer  – can I say that I have been working closely with the Austin Prom Shop Director to ensure that Prom Shop Project and Spring Giving are a wild success this yr?  I went w/Sophie to check out the site we are gonna use for Spring Giving and for Prom Shop.  It doesn’t look large enough, so we are trying to get a new store…. wish us luck!  I also contacted the pageant directors to get Queen support at our Giving and Prom Shop Events.

#44: Read one book every other month – The two 4 hour plane rides came thru!  I had been WAY behind on book reading, so far behind that I realized that I was only on book 10 of 12 of the Left Behind Series.  I finished “The Remnant”!  I thought it might be hard to follow along since it’s been such a long time since my last book in this series.  Surprisingly, didn’t matter at all.  I really do like this series.  I would definitely recommend them!  They are novels about the seven-year period of end-of-the-world tribulation suggested by the biblical book of Revelation.

I am also half way thru a 2nd book.  This one is from an Irish author that I really enjoy.  I think I have almost all of her books.  Basically, it’s chick lit… cute, easy reading!  This book is called “The Other Side of the Story” by Marian Keyes.  Set in the world of publishing, ‘The Other Side of the Story’ is about love, loyalty, glass ceilings and survival tactics – and what to do when you get your chance for revenge.  Most of her books are either set in England or Ireland & sometimes the language is hard to follow, but they are always fun!  She has a whole slew of wonderful books.  Another author I would recommend!

#2: Attend Church 2x per –  Only made it for Ash Wednesday, Feb 5th this month….  😦

#11: Prepare New Recipe – made a new meal last night.  Not sure how I felt about it.  Both the boys ate it, so must have been at least OK.  It was a Low Fat casserole called Chicken Noodle Delight.  Hummmm….

#19: Date Night – Well, I am gonna try really hard…. my hubby doesn’t plan anything and it’s so hard to tie him down.  We wanted to grab a movie tonight, we’ll see….  UPDATE!  It was a no go, but we did something I think is even better… look for another post!  Last chance is tomorrow!

#34: Mani/Pedi – going today after my Dr appt! UPDATE! I did get a mani & pedi at my local Wal-Mart while I was waiting for an oil change.  Nicely done, 2 errands at once!

#55: Work Performance Plan Updates – I typically update my performance stuff on Fridays… I HAVE to get this done tomorrow!

#98: Morning Shift 3x – I changed this, but I have been ok with this one.  Last week, I think I did it twice and this week, I believe it’s also been twice.  Hum, the week of the 11th, I am fairly sure I had it at least twice….

#99: Wear something other than jeans – the last 2 weeks, rock on!  This week, not so much….

#102: Watch a  Netflix Movie – Well, since the last time I think we haven’t been that good.  Writer’s strike is over and new shows are starting back up….

As Needed:

#43: Keep in touch w/HS Friends – I have been conversing with jacque allot lately via e-mail.  Just last week I spoke with Becky on the phone.  She’s in pharmecutical sales and her area goes to Buda, I am going to try and met her in South Austin soon for lunch.

#53: Take Photos at Important Events: I recently went to Seattle to visit my sisters-in-law and mother-in-law…..  Holly, Megan, & Anne.  Holly lives in the Seattle area and is pregnant with her first child, a girl, due in May.  We went up there to host a baby shower & I got the chance to site see!  We had a wonderful time!  I got to visit the Space Needle, the Underground Tour, a Harbor Boat Tour via Argosy Cruises, and a quick peek at Pike Place Market.  I have some good pics of those places as well as several cute ones from the baby shower!  Look for them on webshots!

Exciting news!

The Cox Family is expecting again!  Yes, you read that right.  I’m pregnant!

Very newly pregnant at only 6 weeks along.  Yes, yes… one might want to keep this hush-hush for awhile, but I figure I’d try something new the 2nd time around.  Besides, most who know me well knew we were “trying”.  Second, it is hard to hide not drinking.  Third, I am a horrible liar.  Just easier to fess up and share the good news!

I had my first Dr Appt today which ws uneventful & disappointing.  Very anti-climatic….  Heck, I didn’t even get the pregnancy confirmed.  I peed in their cup for nothing!  I suppose they figure 2 weeks late and 2 positive pregnancy tests is proof enough.  Pfft!  😛

We’ll welcome #2 in October.  Due date is set for Oct 9th, but we all know from Connor that I under bake!  Looks like the end of the years will be filled with lots of parties for the Austin Cox Clan!

I feel guilty saying this, I figure a lil wishful thinking never hurt anyone – THINK PINK!   🙂

Jeff and I officially had our Spring cleaning a little early this year.  I went thru all my winter clothes as well as shoes to determine what would go.  I easily donated 8 shirts, 4 pairs of shoes, 2 jackets, & 3 sweaters.  We also bought a new vacuum, so we donated our old one.  Finally, there were a couple toys that were just never gonna get any use – those went too!  We “cleaned” most of Dec/Jan and donated this past weekend – 2/10.

There are several items on my list I planned to do on a quarterly, monthly, weekly, & as needed basis.  I just realized that I will be coming to the end of my 1st year quarter 1 this month!  Sheesh, how time flies!  Let’s see where I stand, shall we…..

#10: Volunteer  – nothing currently planned, need to get on this one… only 3 more weeks!

#37: Donate Blood – this one I may not get to anytime this year, due to my current state

#44: Read one book every other month – this is essentially reading one book per qtr, I have 3 weeks to get this done – no sweat now that Jeff brought down all my books from the attic & I have a plane trip planned next week!  4 hour plan ride, each way, easily covers one book!

#2: Attend Church 2x per – well, I didn’t do this for January.  However, I did go for Ash Wednesday, Feb 5th!  One down, one to go!

#11: Prepare New Recipe – this one should be easy enough thanks to my magazine, Light and Tasty!

#19: Date Night – I think I may have my parent’s watch Connor for V-Day.  We’ll go to our usual, Texas Land & Cattle

#34: Mani/Pedi – I am sad to say, I didn’t make this for January; however, I WILL make one this month

#55: Work Performance Plan Updates – well, I did update my resume with my newest job!  Although I cannot say I completed this task for the month of January as #56 speaks to updating my resume…. I plan to update my self assessment this month.

#6: Workout 3x  – yea, another one I may just be postponing till oh say Oct….

#98: Morning Shift 3x – um, I changed this one also to… find a new Morning Shift plan, although I am doing my best to adhere to 3x per week – this will eventually need to change esp once Oct arrives

#99: Wear something other than jeans – um, another one that I’ve found difficult.  Maybe with the warming of the weather, I can begin wearing skirts and dresses!

#102: Watch a  Netflix Movie – due to the writer’s strike (thank you!), we’ve been able to make this one!

The Descent

As Needed:

#7: Keep weight below 130lbs – gonna be an impossibility given the current state I am in, best estimates will put me at 165lbs come end of Sept…..

#32: Keep my sites updated – this one is going better than I thought it would, although still NADA from Jeff on the personal family website 😦

#43: Keep in touch w/HS Friends – you know, haven’t tried this one in a long, long while.  I’ll give Jacque a call & send Becky a mail this week……maybe even stop in with Roxanne and she if she’d like to meet for lunch or dinner….

#56: Update Resume w/every Job change – well, I recently applied & interviewed for a job at Dell with the Americas Services Logistics Org.  I have been wanting to break into this org for, oh the last 2 yrs, but have not had any luck.  In order to interview, I had to update my resume with the newest job per my new org – Global (Tech Support) Process Operations.

#64: One Positive for One Negative – I think I am just this person, the person that wants to see the silver lining in every situation….

#65: Organize & File Important Documents – um, yea…. not yet….

#92: Give Jeff and Kids kisses everyday – I updated this one to include the newest Cox.  🙂  I must admit that this one is another notch on the belt for me.

#94: Anti-Aging Creams – Clinique has a line I am crazy about called Repairwear – LOVES IT!  I figured since I am in my 30s and putting on the weight for #2, gotta keep something looking decent…..  I was slacking a tiny bit, but back to my old routine now!

I officially hired a housekeeper on Friday!  Yippee!  Fortunately, I found a company on Craig’s List willing to work within my price range.  I was very concerned about finding someone “reasonable”.  When I lived South, we had someone for about $10 less a month.  I figure an extra $20 a month is not something to really fuss about……. The company is called Affordable Cleaning, Inc.  They handle all types home and garden work.  Michele came out to check out our pad and immediately agreed to my fee.  Apparently, we aren’t very dirty folks……Rossy is our housekeeper & she will come every other Thursday morning starting this week!

I am really, really, really looking forward to having some help.  I know house cleaning is not hard, but it is so darn time consuming.  With summer coming (which means lots of time on the boat) & longer hours working, I was desperate to find a good person to offset some of those “other” things to do.  I’ll let everyone know how it works out!
